Server Patch to v1.4.x: How to migrate character saves?

Evening All,

Congrats AtomicTorch.  My son and I are really enjoying this game, and hope to recruit my LAN buddies to it.

Love the content in v1.4, but I started our characters on our server on v1.3.    The server patched to v1.4 barfs when trying to load the world state from v1.3 with "load 0" at the console, throwing an exception and errors about the <other> tag in its XML.   

The server ran fine when initially installed.  When the clients patched via Steam to 1.4, everything was still peachy.  I never patched the Server, so well done on the client/server backwards compatibility. 

Is there a good process for migrating characters from 1.3 to 1.4?

I've tried:
+ Making a backup of the Saves_Multiplayer Folder.
+ Patched server by copying core.pak from VoidExpanse/Core to VoidExpanse/Server (where I run the Server app from).

Restoring the core file to v1.3 loads the saves as normal.

Please tell me there's a way to migrate characters.  :)    Even if its hacking XML.   

My 8-year old is counting on me (and you, via proxy.)   ;>   Thanks much for the advice!   And if you need help with documentation, I'd love to contribute.

Hello!
I'm glad you and your son like our game!

The savegames from the previous version are compatible with v1.4. The launch problem may happens only because some server executable files or core.cpk are from the previous version. Please be sure you have copied with overwriting all the files of the folders Server_dotNET (or Server_Mono if your server is on Linux) and Core.

If it still not able to load the savegame, please copy-paste the content of latest server log file (the logs folder is nearby the Saves_Multiplayer folder).

Thanks for the fast response, AI.

Was able to recreate the error.    Copying just the core.pak loads from a known good install, the server loads normally (log reports 1.4, but there aren't any hacking locations in space).  Replacing the entire tree results as you suggest (and I thought would work too) causes the server to barf (logs below).   

Should have clarified: This is a Windows 7 host running as --dedicated, from my created /Server directory inside VoidExapnse.   This is a vanilla install with no mods.

Side issue but possibly related: Server never creates ServerConfig.xml, even when prompted with -new.  Searched the whole hard drive... not in /VoidExpanse, not in /Users.

New info: Starting the server a second time (after it fails) results in a normal start and loads the world state.

I'd call user error (on me), but I swear, I touch nothing.   

Oddity: Server still never creates serverconfig.xml anywhere, and on a normal start, server does report one odd error:

Emiraven, if you could play now than there is nothing to worry about. The game had several savegame-damaging issues in the previous game version, we've fixed them in v1.4. However, old versions of savegames may produce some small issues. And some new content is not available in the old versions savegames - such as new ministations and old terminals for hacking.

About the serverconfig.xml - if you run the server as dedicated (flag "--dedicated" (without quotes), please note there are two minus signs in the start of the flag), it should be created nearby the executable file. If you run the server as non-dedicated, then the serverconfig.xml should appear in the game user data folder:
Windows: <User Documents>/AtomicTorchStudio/VoidExpanse
Linux: /.config/AtomicTorchStudio/VoidExpanse/VoidExpanse
Maс: ~/Library/Application Support/AtomicTorchStudio/VoidExpanse

Wow, thanks for the timely responses, AI.

Yeah, launching the server twice, once to let it fail and close it, seems to work after a patch, so thanks for following up.   Good to know about some things not showing up (hacking ministations) on a 1.3 original save, and the minor errors on 1.4 are to be expected and not a hint at bigger problems.

At the risk of being an annoying user:
Is there a way to migrate save data, even if editing XML?   Looks (at a very brief glance) like the save files are encoded, otherwise I'd crack them open and see what's possible.

On ServerConfig.xml, I'm not foolin' ya, it's not there and not being created.    Searched both hard drives for it.   Windows Event log doesn't indicate any permissions block, and server doesn't log anything.   Can you point me to a vanilla serverconfig.xml that I can download and see if the server will read it?

I think I read on the steam forums that using --new creates a new xml file. You need to use the double -

the savegames are editable (just unzip them), however they're too heavy to edit... there are a lot of world data!

About the serverconfig.xml - I'm sorry, the right file name is SettingsServer.xml
Some players also reports they doesn't have this file.
In your case it should be there: "D:\games\steam\steamapps\common\VoidExpanse\Server\SettingsServer.xml"... otherwise I doesn't understand how it may work without the settings file. I will check this, perhaps we will add printing of the path to this file to the console.

Just wanted to thank you for the stellar support.   I'm up and running, so thanks for the vanilla XML file, and "closing" this ticket.   The server 'sees' the file as evidenced by the game browser seeing the server's metadata (server name, description, etc).
