I got it working now. I changed the Steam-Settings and disabled "Enable the steam overlay while in-game" in the Preferences - In-Game. The game starts now on every try.

I have the same issue and I tried it with the tool and "descrete only" and the bug was still the same. Also there was no music when it crashes.

I have the same issue with version 1.2.9. I just bought the game and I'm unable to start. 
MacBook Pro Retina 15", Late 2013, OSX 10.10.2
Is there any way to help you with this issue?
Oh and one thing I noticed: I can start the game directly via the voidexpanse.app and it starts, but it tells me after starting, that the steam client is not running.
