...I can unpack the files by converting copies to .zip (by literally renaming the file to .zip extension), but can't seem to get them back to .mpk the same way... so how do the rest of you do it?

You can create zips on both windows (Right click->send to->compressed folder) and OSX (Right click->compress). There is a nuance though that most people don't get.

1. If you right click a folder, you will get a directory at the root of the zip file with that folder name.
2. If you select a bunch of files and folders and then right click, you will get those files and folders at the root of the zip file.

Method 2 is what you need to do when creating the zip file. Select the header.xml, content folder, and data folder and right-click them. Then rename it to mpk.

Side missions and story missions can both be active on Station Commanders so you don't have to worry about that.

Should be pretty straight forward. I think the answers here could help the devs also prioritize certain features and fixes.

Bug reports / Re: Dedicated Server is saving in wrong slot

To my knowledge (forgot where I saw it) they have previously said it's not possible to run multiple servers yet since it always uses slot 0.

I think the current build (1.2.5) has a bug. I'd wait until the next version is pushed out to continue.

The problem you're having is how you're creating the zip file with OSX.

When you right click on a folder on mac and select compress, it creates a directory inside the root of the zip file first with the name of directory and then puts the files inside that directory.

Instead, you should go into the directory. Then select all the files in the directory, right-click, and select compress. It will create a zip file called Rename it to what you need.

Game discussion / Re: Enemies need difficulty levels...

The Galaxy layout is random so the "pace" of the game isn't really controllable in that sense.

You do need to pay attention to the combat/aggression level of each system you intend to travel through. If you're getting taken apart then upgrade your shield or just run away. There are some "super" enemy types that you'll find anyway regardless of the combat level and you need to learn to recognize them.

If you're out of money, go to one of the starter systems. Get a civilian mining laser (it's free). Get mining.

There are a few animated elements already in place. If you park in front of a planet, you can see it rotating. Also there's beacon light on your ship that should be blinking.

In my opinion, space is huge and nebulas and stars are so far away from each other that you aren't going to see them "move" in the short term. If it's something that's really far away, it shouldn't be moving. Also you have to be careful about adding visual elements that may be distracting. Sometimes you don't have much time to react when you're cruising through a system manually careening through asteroids and debris running from aliens or pirates.

Game discussion / Re: Auto-turn broken? Or intended?
« on: April 07, 2015, 10:47:12 am »
I thought the mouse "turning" was working as intended also. If you have rotating laser mounts, they will follow the cursor and the ship will only turn when the gun tries to turn past the edge of it's mounted turning radius. It will only turn enough to get the laser pointed to where the mouse is. At this point any fixed mounts will still be pointing off to the side.

If this is not intended, then I've been playing the game wrong for a long time.

Help section / Re: Unable to Join Server

You have a network routing issue.

Basically you are trying to connect to your server via the public IP address listed on the server browser. But because you're all behind the same firewall your traffic only gets to the router and then stops there.

Most of the people running MP are doing so on servers on the internet that exist outside of their own private networks. That's the normal way to setup something like this.

You can add your local server to your server list manually. After selecting multiplayer, go to the "CUSTOM" tab and click "ADD" to add your server. You need to figure out your PRIVATE IP address and put that in here.

This should work for both you and your wife.

There's more of them. Also you won't have a problem getting science points when you're further into the game.

I don't think you'll get any faction quests in MP after you've joined a faction. Read this thread:

There is a button you can get to when you login to the Atomic Torch store to get your steam key.

I've noticed the performance increases in 1.1.4 and 1.1.5. I was skipping the systems with Interference because the performance hit I was getting really made them unplayable. Great job guys!

well it may also be that the civilian fuel tank is so small that i completely neglected that fact...
but still its odd that it burns less fuel when using autopilot :D

The autopilot also makes as much use of the Cruise engines as it can. Cruise is basically shifting into a higher gear and your normal engines are low gear.
