I had a similar problems. It occured when you get too close to the sun and after I enabled "Post Effects" in the video options it stopped happening. Possibly there is an effect that is applied when you are near the sun and it's not transparent if Post Effects aren't on.

Yes, but given that there is an option to go as low as 640x480, I feel that the game should not crash using those settings. Or alternatively just remove the options that aren't supported.

Game hangs after you specify that you want something for your ship instead of holodeck when turning in science points. After dismissing the error it crashes. It works if I use the max resolution.
